IHM Managers Code

A Manager's Code, developed by Professor Derek Mowbray of the Management Advisory Service (MAS), has been adapted by the Institute of Healthcare Management (IHM) for application to the management of the NHS, in consultation with the principal professional organisations and trade unions linked to the NHS such as the IHM, RCN, BMA, BPS and Managers in Partnership.

As an independent consultant, Professor Mowbray has been advisor to the Department of Health, UK and the governments of the USA, New Zealand and New South Wales, Australia. He is an independent technical expert to the European commission for whom he has reviewed health services in Lithuania, Turkey and Romania.

The evening of January 25th 2012 saw the gathering of Senior Health and Care managers at Chandos House for the launch of the revised Code of Conduct.

The importance of this event was marked by a presentation by Dame Carol Black, (Expert advisor on Health and Work, Department of Health; Chairman, Nuffield Trust) promoting the revision of the Code which underpins the behaviours expected of managers (including clinical) in the health and care sectors.

Thus the Purpose of the Code is "To build and sustain workplaces with a positive work culture assured by a high quality of management in health and social care"

The Managers Code Focus

The Code focuses on three core subjects concerning the effective delivery of high quality healthcare

  • Managing the Organisation
  • Managing People
  • Managing the Service

The rationale for this is effective delivery of high quality healthcare depends on a workforce of highly skilled people, being able to deliver their skills within a Positive Work Culture that actively encourages staff engagement with their patients and service organisation

The Aim of this Code

Broadly the aim of this Managers Code is to bring about improvements to the culture of the NHS, so enabling improved staff wellbeing, patient care and organisational performance. MAS provides services to support NHS Trusts in Joined up for Jobs Partnership Forum 17th December 2009 facilitating this change and embedding the new Code locally.
