A Review by Chris Clarke FISMA

ISMA news
Autumn 2014

In a handy A5 format, this booklet is packed with information about how to improve your resilience and enable you to better cope with life’s challenges. At just 74 pages and with plasticised covers, this booklet would slip easily into a pocket or briefcase. “Resilience” in an organisation is the route to forging a culture of peak performance whilst also ensuring the health, engagement and safety of staff and of course, resilience starts at a personal level.

Starting with a questionnaire of how you perceive various situations or how you react to them, you are lead into an assessment of your own current personal resilience and given a guide on what areas of your life and attitudes would benefit from an improvement in resilience. This questionnaire can be used at stages throughout your resilience journey to reassess your progress.

Resilience comes from self awareness; understanding your own capabilities and challenges. Being aware of your own characteristics enable you to be able to relate to others objectively. This guide leads you through series of exercises where you acknowledge those things for which you have a flair, those things which have proved to be beyond your capabilities, challenges you have overcome, and those which remain to be resolved. This self awareness assessment sets the scene for the remaining sections of the book.

Following are 8 sections for developmental action to enhance your resilience. These 8 sections are: Determination, Vision, Self-confidence, Self-organisation, Problem solving, Interaction with others, Relationships, and finally an Implementation section calling on you to make a monthly appointment with yourself to review progress. Exercises can be questionnaires, meditation, imagery and puzzles all of which combine to provide a fantastic journey of self realisation all aimed at making you stronger, yet more flexible and resilient.

I have read many self help books over the years and many are quite thick tomes, spend a great deal of time on the psychological processes and take a lot of wading through. This handy guide compares well in that it provides an easy to read and easy to do guide, in a concise yet comprehensive fashion, and has the additional advantage of being in an easy to read and easy to carry format. Additionally, considering its size and format, it would also provide an excellent addition to course material packs for those delivering training courses.

This book provides not only a means of improving our resilience, but also of providing an easy self-check which we could all use periodically as self maintenance to ensure we remain resilient.
